Nutritional Supplements

Before deciding to use a particular supplement or to use any supplement to being with the thing that you need to do is learn what supplements are and how they can benefit and or impair you both now and in the future. Sports supplements are an enormous business and are very common on the sports field and in the gym. Are sports supplements for you? That is what you have to figure out.

Sports supplements are chemicals and items that are said to enhance the performance of the person that takes them in their sport of choice. These things can take the form of things like vitamins that the body makes naturally or needs to receive from food; these supplements can be man made chemicals that are completely foreign to the human body and they can also be naturally occurring hormones that are produced by the body in lower levels. Not all sports supplements are legal to take for anyone and others are only illegal for those that the government does not say can use them.

What can sports supplements do?

A lot of the supplements on the market claim to help build muscle mass, some claim that they will make you lose body fat, some can even give you more energy to increase your stamina in a sporting event. At the same time you are asking what they can do for you a person must also ask themselves what the supplement can do to you. Unlike the cereals, cookies and fruits that we eat, sports supplements are not governed by the Food and Drug Administration. That means that not only is there nobody guaranteeing that the products you buy do what they say they will do but there is also nobody saying they are safe for your to consume.

What is popular and why?

One of the most popular sports supplements on the market these days is DHEA. DHEA stand for dehydroepiandrosterone and is often called a natural steroid. Why is it called that? Your body can actually break down DHEA into testosterone. There is a lot that is still not known about this chemical and how it will affect the users in their upcoming years but some is known for sure. The use of DHEA in excessive amounts can actually lead to results similar to those felt with actual steroids however this benefit does come with its own potential price. As with steroids, DHEA user can actually end up with cancer, infertility, heart troubles and even heart attacks and strokes. If this chemical is used by young children there is a threat of stunted growth which can affect a lot of necessary body development.

Another of the more popular sports supplements in the stores these days is creatine. Creatine is actually a chemical that is made by our own bodies in the lover and kidneys and is found in things we eat like meats. It is said that if you consume a lot of creatine that your body will store it in your muscles and allow you to have a stored energy burst to be used when needed. I am not familiar with any conclusive studies that show that the use of creatine increased sports performance or endurance but that does not mean people have good results from it. Creatine can be gotten at basically any nutrition store or grocery store and is available in powder, pill or liquid form. If you think that it may work for you, you may want to pick some up.

The use of sports supplements and protein supplements is a personal thing since regardless of what science says things work different ways for different people. Consult a physician before using any particular supplement but feel free to experiment with what is out there so you can see for yourself.
