Nutritional Supplements

There is no doubt that the consumption of protein is necessary to not only life but to building muscle. It is understood by most individuals that are looking to gain massive amounts of muscle that they have to eat protein as part of their diet, but not only what their body needs to survive but to consume a lot more than that.

Many scientists and studies say that the average human needs about 70 grams of protein per day and this is easily accomplished by eating a few ounces of meat and drinking a few glasses of milk each day. From the research we have done we have found that bodybuilders tend to eat just under one and a half grams of protein per pound of body weight each day. This works out to be somewhere around 150 or more grams per day for the average male.

Why they are so popular

Whether this is a good amount of protein to eat or not is up for debate all over the world. The fact is that lots of people believe that to build huge muscles this is what they have to do. For this reason protein supplements have taken the world by storm. The bottom line is that eating so many grams of protein per day is difficult for those of us that cannot eat a ton of food. The thought of chomping down on a half dozen chicken breasts every day seems unappealing. However, slugging a shake with added protein supplements is simple, fast and easy to do.

There are many ways that you can take your protein supplements. You can buy a canister of protein powder that can be mixed in with juice or milk or even water. Believe it or not there are shakes on the market that taste very good. There is usually a small after taste but that is to be expected since the majority of the protein supplement manufacturers are trying to accomplish many things at the same time. Not only does the shake have to taste good but it needs to be low in sugar and low in fat as this is a quality that many bodybuilders take into account before trying a new product. The reason this is hard to deal with from a production point of view is that when something needs to taste good the easiest way to do that is add fat and sugar since that is where the flavor is, not the proteins. The shakes have a ton of protein in it and not much else so the challenge is to make bland protein taste good with things other than the common flavor enhancers. Some companies to a great job with it and others do not. That is why many of the protein supplements taste horrible and have to be choked down and others have a flavor that tastes like a premium milkshake.

Too much can be bad

As with everything that seems to be good, some folks take it to the extreme and it works out to be bad. Can you consume too much protein? According to many in the scientific community it is possible to eat too much protein in a day whether from protein supplements or everyday foods. If you consume too much protein there can be dangerous results. When the human body consumes too much protein the excess and unused proteins are excreted from the body through the kidneys as urea. The urea not only takes the proteins from the body but also gets rid of some calcium which we need to keep bones strong. If you continue to flush the calcium out of your body your bones can become brittle and easily broken.

You can consume too much protein regardless off whether it comes from animal meat, protein supplements or vegetables. The recent findings however state that animal meat protein can cause larger issues than vegetable proteins because of the sulphur content. Sulphur is converted to an acid in the body and to offset the acid the body draws calcium and other essential minerals from the bones. Again, this can lead to bone troubles.

Keep your awareness up

You do not have to freak out about every bit of protein you take in but you should be aware that there is a problem with taking in too much. This means if you are using any protein supplements you should keep their use in check and not eat four or five 50 gram or protein shakes every day in addition to your normal intake.

Protein supplements can be very helpful and even one of the best bodybuilding supplements you find. Just remember that too much of any good thing can be a really bad thing and such is true with protein powders and shakes.
